Dental Veneer FAQs

It can be awkward to smile when your teeth are crooked, out of alignment, stained, or chipped. You might want to think about getting dental veneers, and our Vernon dentists are here to answer some questions.

What are dental veneers?

Veneers are tiny porcelain shells with a colour that matches the teeth. They cover teeth that are stained, worn down, chipped, misaligned, uneven or have an irregular shape because they are made to order and adhered to your teeth.

What’s the difference between veneers and crowns?

Crowns cover your teeth like a cap. A veneer is a thin shell that is applied to the front of your tooth with less damage to the natural tooth.

Will I get cavities with veneers on my teeth?

The prevalence of tooth decay with veneers is similar to natural teeth as long as they receive appropriate care.

Is the procedure reversible?

Because a very thin layer of tooth enamel must be removed to accommodate the thickness of the veneer, the process isn’t considered reversible.

What are the advantages of dental veneers?

In terms of dental restorations, veneers preserve the most tooth structure (in comparison to, say, crowns) because very little tooth structure needs to be removed. They could aid in enhancing the look of your teeth, and gum tissues react favourably to dental veneers. These restorations can be stained, but the colour can be matched to the surrounding teeth.

Are there disadvantages to dental veneers?

The process of preparing your tooth for the veneer cannot be undone once it has begun. It is challenging to fix a cracked veneer without having to replace the whole thing. Veneers are not a wise choice for those with bad gum health. Avoiding bad habits like nibbling on pens or biting your nails is crucial because they can cause the veneer to crack. Additionally, veneers can crack or chip in the mouths of those who grind or clench their teeth. Finally, it's critical to maintain excellent oral health and routine dental visits because veneers are still prone to decay.

How long do dental veneers last?

Correctly produced and properly placed, porcelain veneers can last over 10-15 years. They do not require any special care other than regular brushing, flossing and visits to the dentist.

How do I get my new veneers to match my other teeth?

During your consultation, your dentist will talk about this matter. They'll develop a strategy that takes the process of matching colours into account. The majority of people usually whiten their natural teeth first before starting treatment so that their veneers will be a lighter shade.

Do porcelain veneers stain with tea, coffee and red wine?

Veneered porcelain should never get stained. To keep your natural tooth colour as close to your veneers' colour as possible, you should try to avoid or limit drinking these beverages if your teeth have a tendency to stain.

Will my veneered teeth be sensitive to hot and cold?

Due to having a thin layer of enamel removed, there may be some sensitivity to hot and cold foods and beverages in the days following the placement of your veneers. At most a few days should pass before this feeling goes away. To give the veneers time to adjust, it's best to avoid extremely hot or cold foods during the first few days.

How strong are veneers? Are there restrictions on what I can eat?

Veneers made of porcelain are very durable. However, since porcelain is glass, applying very strong forces to the veneers could cause them to crack. It is advised that you avoid chewing hard foods like ice, hard nuts, candy apples, popcorn, and others. These same foods frequently damage natural teeth, so even though porcelain veneers are very durable, they are not indestructible.

I grind my teeth at night. Will this damage my porcelain veneers?

Yes, just as this habit wears down natural teeth, doing this will eventually damage your veneers. To lessen the strain on your teeth while you sleep, your dentist can give you a protective nightguard.
